Project: Picasso Rock Faces
About the artist:(1881-1973) Pablo Picasso was born in Spain. His first word was "piz" short for lapiz, pencil in Spanish. His father was an artist and begain teaching him how to draw at age 7, he trained Picasso to copy master artists for practice. Pablo Picasso is known as a prodigy for his work. Some of his most famous works are Three Musicians and Girl before a Mirror- these are done in a cubist style. He also had a period where he painted everything a monochromatic blue color scheme that is referred to his Blue Period.
Summary: Read Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail, then study Picasso's work. Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail is based on a true fact. The girl in the story was a real model for Picasso.Follow this lesson to create rock faces inspired by Picasso.
Objectives: Identify the elements of art (line, shape, form, space, value, texture and color), Understand and apply media, techniques, and processes, Understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
Supplies for Picasso Rock Faces: (this one doesn't take much to make)
- Black Sharpie(s) and colored if you want to color your rocks
- Smooth Rocks
What is cubism? Do the figures look realistic? Are the paintings colorful? What colors do you see? How do they make you feel?
- Gather smooth, flat(ish) rocks. River rocks work great!
- Draw black outlines pf eyebrows, eyes, noses, mouths, ears and hair with sharpie onto your rocks. Here are some ideas.
- We didn't color ours, but you can add color if you want. You can paint or color with sharpies.
- Voila! Now you can mix and match your parts to make a whole Picasso inspired face!
TIPS: Don't forget your rock has two sides. We made our rocks doubles sided for DOUBLE THE FUN!How many combinations can you make?
