Scratch Art Eggs

Getting ready for Easter? Here is a fun project you can do with your children that is quick and easy.

What you will need:

• A plastic egg that opens Vertically instead of Horizontally (we were given ours with a treat inside)
• Crayons (less waxy, brighter color is better)
• Pencil
• Card stock or watercolor paper
• Waterproof Black Ink (we used Higgins Engrossing brand and had great results) -or- Black liquid tempera paint with a couple drops of dish soap
• Soft bristle paint brush
• Paper clip, toothpick, kabob skewer, chopsticks- (pointed tools)
• Tablecloth or newspapers for workspace

Steps:
Protect your work space! Cover table/work area with table cloth or newspapers and dress children in old t-shirts, aprons or smocks. This can get messy if not supervised. ((The ink can/will stain.))

1. Take your egg and open in half, use the outside of the egg and trace around the outside with pencil onto paper. Trace/arrange eggs however you would like.
2. Color inside the egg shape you traced with firm pressure. You want a pretty thick layer of crayon for best results. (I think ours needed a little more pressure)
3. When eggs are completely colored in, paint directly on top of crayon with Black Ink or Tempera. Let first coat dry. You will want to paint  two coats for best results. You can use a hair dryer in even back and forth motion to speed drying time if needed.
4. Let ink dry completely and then have fun! Scratch the surface to reveal colors underneath!
